Happy New Year ! 2022
Any traditions you/your family do on New Years ?!
Here are some from around the world...
Mexico - a large fruit centerpiece on the New Year's table. At midnight, each person eats 12 grapes to welcome the twelve months of the New Year in.
Switzerland - Godparents traditionally insert a coin into a Zupfe (milk bread loaf) and give to their God children..
Brazil - eating pomegranates ! the many seeds symbolize wealth for the future.
Hungarians - eat roast pig, putting an apple in it's mouth and a 4 leaf clover in it's snout.
Probably our favorite unit study we did on our property was Lewis and Clark ! Between 5 children and myself we did pretty well with the characters. We used the trails for the "expedition" and ended up at the pond (Pacific Ocean). Along the way there were Indians hiding in the woods.....learned a little more of the forest animals they may have seen and experienced. It was a lot of fun and the children seemed to enjoy it
One of our first unit studies was forest animals. The habitat, what they ate, identifying tracks, etc. On 65 acres on top of a small mountain we've seen deer, bear, copperheads, black snakes, turkeys, bobcats, coyote, fox, owls, opossum and raccoon We studied what to do and what not to do if we came upon a bear. Hard to put into practice once surprised by one tho. I knew not to run, but my legs didn't listen to me. Thankfully it did not chase me. We often went hiking/trail blazing and rested for a picnic. We also have a pond where we spotted snapping turtles, tadpoles, frogs ....even beavers !
Eventually I'll post some of these unit studies I wrote for my kids....keep checking !
Good Morning
In 2002 we moved from Northern Virginia to Piedmont area. We camped on our 65 acre property while the house was being built. We were really roughing it ! Outdoor privy for years ! More about that on another day We first lived in a big tent and put all our STUFF in a few freight containers on our property. The UP container on top of the small mountain and the DOWN container at the bottom near the campsite Later we purchased 2 small campers. The 5 children in one and Hubby and I in the other. We set up an outside kitchen...a small microwave, counter top oven under a big canopy with a picnic table.
All the books and home school stuff had been loaded into the DOWN container....but the last things loaded in was the furniture :/ Uh Oh...We then located the library....and unit studies were about to be born....to us anyway
I began my home schooling journey in 1992. My first child Gabrielle began around age 5. We started with mainly text books, work books, etc. I was new at it and had no idea what I was doing ! My second child Joseph arrived in Summer of 1992 and we continued. It was a challenge as Joseph had a bad reaction to DPT immunizations at age 1 year old. He stopped walking, talking and playing. At age 6 years he was able to communicate more so and we continued all the more with the home schooling. Robert arrived in Winter 1994, Heidi 1997 and Jeremiah in 1999. Wow ! we had a classroom of different ages, learning styles and personality ! I did find it helped Joseph immensely to hold a koosh ball as I was reading to him and the others. We home schooled each all the way thru Highschool age....up to graduation. All have moved out and on their own except Joseph. He's our right hand man and takes care of his Mom and Dad
Hi there, I am using TPN now!!!
